It would appear that an overwhelming majority within the grade believe that the statue should be removed. What about the other U.S. presidents. You may or may not know that 10 of the first 12 U.S. presidents owned slaves. Should we replace each statue that honors these presidents too?

No, only Thomas Jefferson's statue should be taken down for owning slaves because he was the one who created the law saying "all men are created equal." If he's not going to obey that, he's a hypocrite and therefore doesn't deserve a statue.

I feel the Thomas Jefferson statue should be removed from City Hall because Thomas Jefferson owned slaves and I believe someone who owned slaves shouldn't be deserving of a statue because slavery was a bad thing and there shouldn't be statues of people who took part in it.

Thomas Jefferson’s statues across the United States should be removed. Even though he’s one of the founding fathers and wrote the Declaration of Independence he still kept a lot of slaves. It doesn’t give him the right to do that and I think that he should make a good example for the citizens which he didn’t.

I'm not sure if the statue should be removed. On one hand, I think it isn't great that people are pretty much just laser-focusing on the fact that Jefferson owned slaves, even though it was extremely common for the time, and there was literally a law for a significant portion of Virginia's existence, where Jefferson was from, that made it illegal to set slaves free. I just don't think it's logical to laser-focus on one bad thing about an extremely important figure in American history. It's just dumb to cancel anything and everything that is flawed. Jefferson was a human being, and no human is perfect. Soon enough, we'll be saying, "ALL STATUES OF LINCOLN SHOULD BE REMOVED BECAUSE HE DIDN'T CALL FOR THE IMMEDIATE FREEDOM OF ALL SLAVES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA". It just isn't really fair to compare a person to modern standards without taking the figure's time period into account. On the other hand, I don't really get the point of having Jefferson in NYC. He was important to America, yes, but how about a person from New York? He was the president, but I feel like he didn't have a huge impact of New York in particular, and there is probably already enough statues of him in DC. If there isn't, let's make one! Also, the complaints about slavery are completely fair, so I suggest that we erect a statue of a person from New York City, since it's the city hall. For one of the biggest cities in the world, there's tons of options. (Sidenote) Wow. This was way longer and rant-ier than I thought it would be.

I think the statues of Thomas Jefferson should be removed across the United States. Although he was an important figure in the American Revolution, he owned a lot of slaves. Now in modern day, we're trying to get rid of inequality and injustice, so having a statue of a figure that owned and/or promoted slaves gives the wrong idea.

In my opinion I fully think the Thomas Jefferson statue should be removed, some may counter that he's considered a founding father, and was the 3rd president all of that doesn't matter America stands equal rights amongst everyone, the fact that he owned many slaves is just opposite of what America is supposed to stand for.

I think that the statue of Thomas Jefferson should be taken down. Even though Thomas Jefferson did contribute to helping the colonies get their freedom and wrote the Declaration of Independence, there are some drawbacks. As an example, Jefferson wrote that "all men are created equal", ironically, he himself owned slaves. Though Jefferson wrote this in the Declaration of Independence, it seems that he may not have meant people of color as well. Thus, Thomas Jefferson's statue should be taken down from City Hall.

They made the right choice to just bring down Thomas Jefferson's statue. It's clear that he isn't a good figure and even though he's one of the finding fathers. Like imagine a person that found a company that is respected; now imagine people find out that they mistreat people- It wouldn't be a good look. Think that to this solution; he's just a racist, white, rich, and powerful dude who just happened to set up this country.

I think that the Thomas Jefferson Statues should be removed because the fact that he owned slaves contradicts the Declaration of Independence, where he wrote, "All men are created equal". This shows that what Jefferson really meant, was that all white men were created equal, and that people of color were not included.

Although he was a prominent figure in the history of the United States, the statue should be removed. Owning slaves whilst saying "All men are created equal" is contradicting. He should be shown as an important person in history but he shouldn't be shown in a good light. Even though from his standpoint back then, when the only way to get where he was was with money, owning slaves was still wrong. They should remove the statue and move it somewhere else where it doesn't have as much political meaning. On the other hand, they shouldn't remove it because it's been in the chamber since 1884, but the little bit of history it has in the chamber isn't as significant compared to owning slaves.(They probably shouldn't destroy the statue as it was made in 1883)

I think that the statue should be removed because owning slaves is morally wrong and we shouldn't praise someone who owned slaves as property enough to have a statue in city hall for them. However, we shouldn't forget the huge impact that Jefferson as well as the other founding fathers made in history and on our country today.

Despite Thomas Jefferson being one of the most important historical figures in the US and being one of the founding fathers, I believe that people should remove the statue of him because he supported slavery, owning around 130 African American slaves. Thus, there shouldn't be a statue honoring a horrible person. In addition, in the Declaration of Independence, he wrote that "all men are created equal" whilst owning African American slaves, which is very contradicting. Jefferson owning slaves shows that his idea of equality did not include POC.

I think the statue of Thomas Jefferson should be removed from city hall. Thomas Jefferson once wrote, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." The way I perceive this is anyone that lives in the united states should be treated the same way as everyone else. Whether they are a slave, female, male it matter. Everyone should be treated the same way. And the fact that he still owned slaves while he wrote this doesnt register right with me. When someone like him owns slaves it doesnt represent the United States the right way. And the fact that this statue is in city hall, where everyone is able to come speak out about their thoughts, our a problem in the city isn't right.

I believe that the statue of Thomas Jefferson should not be removed for the fact that he was on of the founding fathers, the third president of the United States, as well as the original writer of the Declaration of Independence. If such a figure was removed, what would that make America? If the author of the Declaration was declared evil, doesn't that make the Declaration evil as well? And what would happen if the foundation of the independence of the United States was seen as evil? Of course, he owned 130 slaves which contradicts his role as a political leader of a democratic union, but, should we conclude someone as bad for one flaw in his life? It is unfair to judge him based only on the fact that he earned 130 slaves. In this viewpoint, all significant figures are flawed in some way. George Washington also owned slaves, but he's seen as a Revolutionary War Hero as well as the first president of the United States. We should see Jefferson as one of the founding fathers, the brilliant writer of the Declaration, not just the man who owned 130 slaves. After all, all people have their flaws. It is unrealistic and unfair to put forth expectations of perfection on anyone.

I think that the statue should be removed because Thomas Jefferson was supposed to be a roll model since he was a president. As a leader of the country i don't think that its fair that he owned slaves which was unfair. Since there are statues of him all over the us it should be removed to show that slavery isn't ok and shouldn't have ever been a thing. By not removing his statues its showing people that he was a great leader, owning slaves shouldn't make a great leader,

I believe that statues of Thomas Jefferson should be removed because his past relating slaves wasn't good at all. Many people can get offended by seeing the fact he had 130 slaves. If the statues are removed, I think that the other roles that he had in the revolution and others relating with the United States wouldn't be impacted that much because we can still learn about them through textbooks and such without looking at statues and reading the texts that are on them.

Although Thomas Jefferson accomplished many things for America overall, I think that his statue should be taken down. I think this because he supported slavery and he had relations with a teenaged slave. In addition, taking the statue down would show that America has grown in some way by changing and preventing past leaders giving a bad example to people now. It also tells that the people who would keep the statue would rather do nothing to the statue than taking it down, or arguing that it should be there.

Jefferson did own hundreds of slaves, however he still supported the idea of abolishing slavery. The only reason why he did not free his slaves was because he was in debt. This is still wrong on multiple levels though, not only that but he had multiple relationships with his slaves

I think we should put up a plaque that talks about Thomas Jefferson next to the statue. Although he was a bad person who did horrendous things, he is still an important figure in our history. It’s a statue of Thomas Jefferson holding the Declaration of Independence in which he states, “all men are created equal.” During that time, it might not have been true but now, we can say that we’re closer to that idea. Removing the statue is like trying to erase what happened. Instead of focusing on the negative, we can look at the statue and see how far we’ve come as a nation.

I believe the several statues of Thomas Jefferson across the US shouldn’t be removed. Although Jefferson owned well over 100 slaves, owning slaves back then were common at the time. Not to mention all the other major contributions and achievements he’s made that overrule the single flaw in his career, such as drafting the famous Declaration of Independence, stabilizing the US economy, doubling the size of the US via the Louisiana purchase, and much more. Therefore, even though Thomas Jefferson committed a wrong action in his life, we shouldn’t forget the overruling good he also did.

The statue of Thomas Jefferson should be removed because it’s a disrespect to many people in our country to glorify somebody who was a slave owner. Certainly Jefferson has done a lot of good, and in history, some celebrated people have also done a lot of bad. What should determine how these people are honored is if what they did aligns with our values today. As a matter of fact, in the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson wrote, “All men are created equal.” He didn’t even follow the values he set for the United States! There is definitely a disconnect between what Jefferson does and says; this ruins the integrity of the Declaration of Independence. It is our responsibility to be informed of the good and the bad of history. However, we shouldn’t be reminded with a statue of Thomas Jefferson how great he is, while overlooking the fact that he dehumanized others.

The statue of Thomas Jefferson should not be removed because though he owned slaves, owning slaves was a normalized thing back then. Even today, there are many things that are wrong to do, but we still do it because it’s been normalized. In addition, the statue was built for a reason. He made a huge impact on the US. Taking down the statue not only doesn’t change the fact that he owned slaves, but it’s also erasing a part of history.

Even now, we are in a time of national split, and we inch closer and closer to another civil war. Taking down the statue of one of our founding fathers would further polarize the differences between right and left, and it would do no good for the country.

Yes, I think the statue should be removed because he used slave, he owned over 130 slaves. He did a lot for the country but still, slavery is not cool.

Yes, I think the statue of Thomas Jefferson should be removed. Even though he did some important things for America, He supported slavery and even owned 130.

I think the statue should be removed because owning slaves is a violation of human rights and a direct contradiction to his own words "all men are created equal", If he did mean to include black people then he is a hypocrite, if he didn't then well he didn't see them as people, then again, owning slaves was pretty much mandatory for being a "land-owner" and a rich person.

I think Thomas Jefferson statues should be removed because he supported slavery and he wrote "all man are created equal" but he didn't include all the colors into that quote,

I feel that we should remove Jefferson’s Statue from City Hall because he owned around 130 slaves and he wrote “all me were created equal” and he still owned slaves.

I think Thomas Jefferson’s statue should be removed from city hall , even if he was considered one of the founding fathers and did things to make what people call America today because of the fact that he was a slave owner and that to some people that statue can be considered inappropriate and disturbing.

i think thomas jefferson's statue should be removed even if he did a lot for our country, for example he wrote the declaration of independence, but he did own around 600 slaves.

I don't think that Thomas Jefferson's statue should be removed because we are only judging from the fact that he owned slaves. I think that the goods that he has done overshadow the fact that he owned slaves. He helped a lot with shaping the United States today and is one of the Founding Fathers.

i think Thomas Jefferson's statue should be taken down because his quote is not true according to him owning slaves which those people do not have rights and are not treated the same as everyone else.

I think the Thomas Jefferson statues across the United State should be removed because his connection to slavery. Back then it was okay to own slaves so people didn't cared he owned slaves, but right now, racism problems with black people have been big. It can affect lots of people and cause problems like the George Floyd case did last year. It really didn't make sense to have a statue of someone related to slavery in United State this day.

i think Thomas Jefferson statues should be remove because he owned slaves even though he fought for freedom. Also because of what he wrote "all men are created equal" in the U.S. Declaration of Independence but he still owned slaves.i also think that now that these years that passed and are going on,people are paying more attention to what people are doing/did and are trying to fix on how they want to "look up to" and who they want in history.

i do think that the Thomas Jefferson statue should be removed because he did own slaves and nothing changes the fact that he did in fact own slaves. Owning slaves is horrible and sad. It's simply not cool, so, yes. I do believe it should be removed.

Half of me say take it down and the other half say to leave it up and let the young kids to know that he did something very bad in the past because it is like a artfact in the past and it let us know that something bad happend in the past.

i believe that its a good idea that there taking down the statue of Thomas Jefferson. even tho he was a big part in history you cant just ignore all the things he did to people of color. lots of people say "it was normal back then" yea sure i was more "normal " to have slaves back in the day but it doesn't mean that people didn't know having slaves was bad.if people didn't know having slaves were bad they wouldn't have had free states.

i think they shouldn't since the statue shouldn't since it was a part of history that we should be glad that we don't have to live in that time but we can look back and maybe think of stuff that are wrong in people minds but that is history it suppose to be wrong not always the happy side of stuff you need to see the dark past and just move on from that and removing it will make it harder to look back and learn from that and history is about all of that. If we do remove Thomas so do we remove George from dollar bills since he owned slaves we can't just remove everything that has bad meaning behind. We should keep historical items or artifacts even if they have a very dark backstory it still matter to history.

I believe the statue of Tomas Jefferson should be removed, but not entirely. I believe a better solution would be to have it relocated to a public (historic) museum that doesn't charge for entry because even though what Tomas Jefferson did and thought of slaves and slavery wasn't entirely right, he was still a founding father who laid part of the foundation for what our country is today. He is still a very important figure in history even if his having slaves doesn't match up with what society today thinks and has established as right and wrong. It would be better to honor the things he did right and acknowledge the things he did that probably weren't so right, rather than trying to place everything completely in one category of right or wrong.

In my opinion, I think that the Thomas Jefferson statue should be removed. I don't think it is a good influence to let a statue of someone who owned slaves to be displayed in City Hall. Back then, having slaves seemed normal to people, but today, as hate crimes grow, people are more aware and against slavery. At the same time, Jefferson was not the only president/important figure in US history that owned slaves, so I’m not completely sure if only taking down Jefferson’s statue will be enough to show that slavery is bad and it should not exist.

I think that the statue should not be removed. Abraham Lincoln was a very successful person and deserves a statue. The statue should not be removed just because he did something that was normal at the time, which is having slaves. Although it is not good now, it was different back then. Abraham Lincoln deserves the statue.

Yes because he wrote all men are creates equal in the Declaration of Independence. However, as a president, he was not a good model.

Yes, because he did the opposite of what he was fighting for and he owned slaves.
