Next to those who believe, "Wear a mask" or "No reason to wear a mask," the closing of schools has been the most polarizing issue in our nation. One legitimate reason is many families will have to decide how to address their childcare concerns. The other reason for making the difficult decision means hindering a child's education by going from the hybrid model (synchronous/asynchronous) to now back to full remote. Those families/students who decided to attended class a few times a week, had some level of normalcy in their lives, albeit it was very different from a regular school day. Once again, the students impacted went back to what we were all doing back in March to June of this year. But, I think we must all realize the reason for doing this is because (according to the scientific data) there is an elderly population (our parents, grandparents) and those with underlying conditions who are the most vulnerable to COVID-19. In my opinion, most of us will be fine but this is not a time to be selfish. We need to make the adjustments now and sacrifice our routines for the greater good in order to protect those we love. Lastly, remember the pandemic of 1918!
I think that closing schools is a smart decision because covid-19 cases are spreading meaning that maybe one of the staff members or students are in danger.
i believe that he made a good choice to close schools to protect children us students from the risk of Corona but i also feel that, that is only one portion of it in the steps to protect us because that stopped us from socializing but not the adults and older people in our lives so just like how we got shut down those same people need to be as well or the good impact may not out-way the bad with this remedy.
I think that he made the right decision because since the virus spreads, it would be better if a lot of people aren't outside or in big groups.
I think that it is good that they are closing schools because the covid rates are going up, hopefully we can resume after the new year.
I think that it is good that the Mayor has shut down the schools because less people can get the virus if we stay home more so that covid-19 don't affect more people.
On the contrary, if people can't get support like food, they'll all die.
I'm sure there are still places giving out free meals, but students just won't be able to learn in school physically.
I don't think that it was a very good decision to close the schools because of the struggles in remote learning. For example, at home not all students have wifi or a device to work on. In addition, people including me are distracting learning at home.
I felt that it was unfair to close the schools the circumstances are different in NYC. I don't think of 3% of the city has Covid is a fair mesuarment because we don't know how much of that is related to the schools. If there was higher cases in the city or 3% in schools but it just seems so early and unfair. Espically were the cases are coming from. And to me sad school close because I felt focused in school and it helped me. I felt he could of closed it thanksgiving I don't think that would have made such a difference.
I love the balance of opinions so far--and you are all making valid points.
Personally I am sad that schools closed because I learn better when I have a teacher in front of me, but I understand why. When I go outside on the weekends I see so many people not wearing masks and its like they forgot that Covid was a thing and by closing schools that limits the spread of the virus. Although it sucks, if it helps get rid of this virus then that’s good enough for me
It's good that schools have closed. If they hadn't then covid would have spread more and possibly hurt more people. NYC is a city where a virus like covid could spread fast. Education wise, it might not be so good. There isn't much work remote and it doesn't sink in as much, so I personally, am not learning the best remote.
Yeah I agree
I think that this decision was a good decision. Just because everyone in school is 6 feet apart, wearing masks and sanitizing regularly doesn't mean someone won't get corona virus. School isn't the problem, it's the students way of going from school and going home that's the problem. Someone may get corona from just walking home from school or walking to school. And with the recent surge of corona virus cases, that's more likely to happen.
I think that the mayor made a good decision to close New York City public schools because he was looking out for the teens and children of the city. He did not want to risk the lives of young kids going to school and potentially getting Covid-19.
I think this decision was needed. It is much safer to not go to school with all the recent cases. I also think that even being able to go to school this year was amazing. With all the rules and regulation for COVID it still doesn't guarantee complete safety.
Neither does staying at home.
I think that it's good that everyone is staying home. I hope people take this lock down a little more seriously because I have a feeling that if everyone took super duper safe precautions in march, we would have school full time.
I think that it is good reguards to our safety. Though I am not entiely sure I understand why he closed schools instead of other places. This is because schools have the lowest infection rates compared to other places. I also think it unfair since certain places have more infection rates than the city, so the mayor should take the right precautions for each area.
The mayor's decision to close public schools is fine to me because it help protect both the students and adults and it might lower the chance of getting coronavirus, since less people will be going out. In addition, I choose full remote learning, so this closing public schools doesn't have much impact on me.
I think this decision was a good choice because it helps stops the spread of covid-19.
I agree with what most people said because since the rate was going up the mayor's decision to close school only for a little should prevent kid from getting covid-19 and the spread rate of the virus.
I think the Mayor made a good decision because it protects the people around us from getting infected by the covid-19.
its was the best option since the cases are going up
I mean, it's not like there are hundreds of people who aren't wearing masks and spreading the virus, no no no! We have to protect peoples rights! It's not like we haven't done that before so we could theoretically mandate secret police to force people to wear masks, we must protect their rights even though we are in a state of emergency!
The decision to close schools was the right choice for the mayor to do because since the cases of cov19 have been going up schools will have to be close due to the safety of children and family’s that are needed to protect them from the virus and it was a right choice to close down the schools for now in my opinion.
I think that it was right to close school so kids/teachers and other people do not get covid. But I also do not like being remote so I hope this ends soon.
It's a good decision to close public schools because it can protect many students and teachers and other people. So it will decrease the risk of letting more people get infected by COVID-19. I hope that we can return to school around next year because remote learning is good, but it's also hard in some ways.
I think that it was a good idea so that it will keep students and teacher safe.
I think the mayor's decision to close public schools is logical, as corona is evolving, and becoming a bigger threat. The meals should always be available, even if public schools are closed. It is not better to have corona than to starve.
I think that there is both pros and cons on closing down New York City Public school. The Pros on closing down New York City public school so it could help the society to decrease the case of COVID-19. However, the cons on closing down New York City Public school is that student could sometimes struggle or feel more stress out over the impact of remote learning cause of the lack of work that their receiving. Students home environment could also impact them because a student like me who get distracted easily on phone or any electronic, I feel like it is harder for them to concentrate on what their supposed to be doing.
I think the closing of the schools is a good decision. I know a lot of people are upset that they won't get to have in person teaching for a bit, but I think it's for the best for our safety. We don't want to risk anyone of harm due to covid-19 so taking precautions I think this is what was needed because cases are rising.
I think the decision to close schools was pretty good since covid cases spiked up recently. Something I didn't like was having to have new classes and the transition to remote
I think the closing of schools is a good choice, since blended learning is confusing. Also, now that everyone is remote, it is now easier to understand what you need to do for school.
I think the decision was necessary, because some people still aren't taking the pandemic seriously, so this may be like a wakeup call for them. Also, no matter how well schools were doing in terms of safety, it's always good to have that feeling of security for the parents of the kids and the schools.
In my opinion, I believe that it was a good idea to shut down the schools because that way less people will get Covid but shutting down schools also brings problems such as students not understanding their work as well compared to in-person learning.
I think the mayor's decision is good. The covid cases are getting worse and I think people need to stay home as much as possible so it doesn't spread to even more people.
The decision of closing schools is a good choice since the covid cases are going up. No one really wants to get sick with a dangerous virus with no cure yet whatsoever. Safety comes first. Once the covid cases go down, then they can consider opening the schools back up again. I heard that the virus likes to stay inside so maybe there can be covid inside school buildings. That can make parents worried about their children, and it can make children may get covid. Lots of people want to stay at home since its the only place they can trust. All in all, closing schools is a good choice.
I think the Mayor did the right choice of closing off the public schools because of how it may reduce the chances of students getting covid though the closing of school may impact how students learn. It's better to stay safe first and wait till the moment where everything is all good and safe again.
I think the mayor closing the school was a good choice despite people saying they do and focus better in school, because health comes first, as you probably won’t be able to study well in school if your sick. Other then that, the mayor closing the school down is also a good choice since COVID cases has gone up, which makes it a higher percentage that people can get sick, maybe if the cases go down they can reopen the school.
In my opinion, I think the Mayor's decision of temporarily closing public schools was the right choice because it's still possible for students in schools to catch Covid despite the fact that they are practicing social distancing. However, the downside of this decision is that, some students depend on going to school for education. They might not have the tools needed for learning online, so with schools closed again, it will be almost impossible for them to learn.
I think the decision to close down schools was a necessary decision and I agree with it since the cases are increasing which puts everybody at greater risk so it's better to be safe than sorry
I think the Mayor's decision to close schools temporarily was good because a reason they would close down schools is because COVID cases are rising. So closing schools would probably lower cases since less people are next to each other, so then closing schools temporarily would probably be the best decision if the COVID cases are a bit higher.
I think that the mayor's decision to close public schools temporarily because of the recent surge in Covid-19 cases is a smart and good thing. If public schools weren't closed then more people can be affected by the corona virus and the cases will get higher and higher and maybe the death mortality rate will increase. However, since the mayor made this decision less people will be affected and everyone can be safe.
As a person who actually went to blended learning, I personally think it was a good choice to shut down the schools for the sake of preventing cases, because in there, it was mediocre at the most but some times I actually thought I could have got covid 19.
I think its a good thing because if they didn't then the cases might rise more. And it will help slow down the cases.
I think it's a good decision with the COVID cases rising and will prevent the rise of the cases
I think the Mayor made a good choice in closing the public schools to reduce the chance of students and teachers getting COVID. However, I feel like since more people are going to be online school, our grades might go down because online school is harder then actual school.
I think he made the right choice shutting down the schools. Mainly because schools are a very open place where you can endanger kids, teens, adults, and even the elderly. With the numbers rising fast in nyc I think that closing the schools might not exactly stop the spread, but it protects many people from being exposed to the virus, and possibly intaking it.
I understand the reason why they close the school and how it can help keep safety but I hope it end soon because I do better in parson then remote.
I think that this was the right choice to shut down schools temporarily, as it would be much safer and prevents a second wave from happening, and making it worse than what it already is
I think closing the schools was a good decision because it will help reduce contact between two individuals, moreover with the cases increasing it would be best for people to stay home.
I think that the decision of closing the school temporarily is a great decision because this can prevent the amount of cases to lower. This is only if they go outside less and has less interactions with other people outside. Going to big public places like schools can cause more and more cases. If one person gets the COVID, the people around him that has interactions with him, can get infections too.
I think the mayor made a good decision to temporarily close down the schools and have everyone take part in fully remote learning because it's for the greater good of this country. It's crucial for everyone to stay safe by taking the mandatory precautions and to choose to opt into full remote learning when necessary. Albeit, I personally think that taking part in blended learning was somewhat better for me because it enabled me to concentrate more, to better regulate my assignments that I receive from a whole variety of different subjects, and to ask more questions when the teachers are around more frequently in-person to substantially benefit me by helping me with my struggles on certain assignments, as well as provide emotional support.
Many of you have very good reasons why to keep schools open or shut. Remember the protocols when we are home with our families as well. Keep up the good work to protect your communities!
I think the mayors decision to close public schools in NYC was a good decision. Since schools are indoors and they are saying the virus spreads quicker indoors. The cases in NYC are going up so by closing the schools for now we are slowing the spread. By closing the schools there is also less interaction with others so the spread should slow. People have to travel to schools by trains and buses and by not having the schools open less people will be traveling and there will be less contact with other people in closed spaces so it's less of a chance for people to come in contact with the virus and spread it to others.
I think it was quite a smart decision. He had doubts deciding whether school should be open or not at the beginning. Better safe then sorry we don't want to risk any covid peaks so we can all officially go back to school safely next year.
I think the Mayor's decision to close public schools was a good decision because it will slow down the spread of Covid. There were many students and teachers that got the virus in New York. It is safer because less children and teacher will be exposed to the virus. Students and teachers go by their families so they are keeping them self safe, their family safe. They are also helping keep New York safe. So that is why I think it was a good idea because there will probably be less cases and this can help stop the spread.
I definitely think the mayor's decision to close schools was a good idea Because, covid cases can go down and its more safer.
I think the mayor made a good decision about closing public schools because in nyc there are a lot of people which makes it easier for the virus to spread. Furthermore, this can help stop the spread of the virus and it makes it safe for students and the teachers. This also helps us prepare for an emergency.
I think that it was a good idea that the mayor had closed the school down because cases had started to rise,so it was a good idea so no one would be in danger.
Hi 8th grade students, I am so impressed with all of your opinions on this very important and difficult topic that our society must manage. This pandemic has forced a new normal for all of us, especially in education. I am so proud of all you because of your desire for knowledge and willingness to continue your education via remote or blended. Thank you for your insight and honesty about the difficulties you face while learning from home. This is something I will bring back to our staff and strategies on how to best assist you with these difficulties you face.
I think that this decision was a great idea as Covid cases have been rising. However, this shouldn't have ever happened in the first place because schools should have never been opened! If I was Mayor, I would wait until the world is slowly recovering and cases are slowly going down in numbers to reopen schools.
I think that temporarily closing schools is a very good idea. Usually when I'm in a life threatening situation, my instinct would tell me to take the most safe possible path. In this situation, New York City has more than 1 million students, and the ones that goes to school are at risk.
Thank you Mr. Romero for taking the time to post on our blog. Our students were very happy to hear from you!
I think that the decision of closing down public schools temporarily is the right decision because it shows that the mayor is trying his best with what he is able to do to keep the whole state safe. The increase in the covid cases and his actions show that he is keeping up with the whole pandemic and making sure that we take good safety precautions when needed if we are planning for some students to go to school.
I think the mayor closed down schools so it will hopefully low the rate of COVID-19 going up everyday. I think what the mayor did was a good choice because so then kids at school will not get effected by covid from school ], when on our way home or going to school.
I think that this decision will hopefully stop the spread and that right now, it is the right decision for everyone's safety. There has been record breaking numbers lately almost everyday.
I think that closing down schools was a good idea because if covid did get into schools, it would not only hurt kids but all the familys that are sending their kids to school. That would hurt the people that have to work to support their families because they wouldn't be able to go to work, overall hurting people and businesses. With the spike happening, its not worth infecting those families.
Yes, Sophia there are record breaking numbers throughout the US. Some states have an increase in cases by over 60%--and their hospitals are overcrowding. It is very alarming to read in the news what is going on in our states--and to think NYC and New York State is not as bad as other states just indicates the effort we have all contributed to in order to mitigate the virus since March----- And to think winter has not even started----IDK!
I think that the mayor made a good decision because the number of people who had
COVID-19 is getting higher again, so it is safer to stay at home. In addition, I think if school is close until COVID-19 is over it might be a good decision because after that time period our normal live will be back. But it might be hard for some people to still at home for that long.
I think the mayor's decision to close down public schools was good because by doing that it protects people by having them stay at home. Moreover, it can also decrease the transfer of covid-19 because there's less people outside.
I think it was a good decision but i cant help but feel that the last few months accomplished nothing. we were so close to reopening and now all our progress is gone.
I think the decision was debatable, it has a pros and cons. The pros as in they could try to slow the growth of the Coronavirus since the colder the season is, the wider it could spread. But the cons would be how most students that went to school in person chose that decision because remote learning was uncomfortable or confusing to them. However the best is to close the schools since the virus has been spreading insanely fast.
I think that it was a smart move because if the mayor did not close the schools with the coronavirus cases going up it would be more likely that a teacher or student would get corna
Thank you for sharing this blog with me. I am very impressed with all of your thoughtful and smart comments regarding learning from home during a pandemic. Both sides have value - as we as a Nation, and Worldwide- are all struggling with how to proceed safely. This is a very important time in history that you (we) are ALL living through. It will be interesting to see how this history is remembered in years to come.
I think that it is a good idea because it's going to keep everyone safe. We shouldn't risk going to school and putting others in danger.
I think it was a good idea because people going to school increased their chances of getting COVID. When they were all changed to remote made it so the chances got lower and people don’t have to go outside be with a large group of people.
In my opinion, its good that the mayor closed the schools because recently there was a surge of corona. If the schools hadn't been closed the virus could possibly spread even more.
In my opinion, this is a great safety procedure. This keeps the students and their families safer. There is no contact with other students that may have been exposed. Which means that the chances of the virus spreading is lowered.
I think is good idea to closed the pubic school temporary , because it can help to stop spread the Covid 19.
I think this is good for the defense against Covid-19, at least it reduces the chance of infection.
I think that closing down the schools was good for some hings however bad for others. For middle school and even high school kids, it's pretty easy for us to do remote learning because we understand the work. However, younger kids and special needs kids, need the teachers help and with remote learning, the teachers aren't able to help as much.
